LASIK XTRA in Dubai

How LASIK XTRA Works

The LASIK XTRA procedure is the final step of laser eye surgery and is performed after your refractive error has been corrected but before the corneal flap has been laid back in place.

A patented riboflavin (vitamin B2) formulation is applied to the exposed stroma (the corneal tissue). The flap is then replaced and UVA illumination is applied using the special Avedro system. The ultraviolet rays cause the riboflavin to fluoresce, strengthening the bonds between the collagen fibers in the corneal tissue.

LASIK eye surgery is truly an investment in your quality of life. Still, the decision to undergo LASIK requires careful consideration before going forward. At Atlanta Vision Clinic, we understand that. We also realize LASIK is a significant financial commitment.

We’re dedicated to investing in the most advanced technology available to provide you with the safest surgery possible, positive results and drastically improved vision, to eliminate your need for corrective lenses.

As part of this commitment, we’re introducing LASIK XTRA®. This procedure, developed by Avedro, is performed during standard LASIK surgery to restore the biomechanical integrity and strength to the cornea after a LASIK procedure.

The Benefits of LASIK XTRA

The LASIK XTRA procedure provides you with peace of mind knowing you are receiving the highest quality and safest care available. But that’s not the only reason to have this procedure. By choosing LASIK XTRA you will:
• Extend the longevity of LASIK results.
• Decrease the need for touch-up procedures later in life.
• Reduce the risks of long-term vision changes.
• Delay or stop the progression of keratoconus (an eye disease that affects and distorts the shape of the cornea).

Who Should Receive LASIK XTRA?

While LASIK XTRA can be performed on any patient, it generally offers the best results for those who suffer from myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness).

This procedure can also be beneficial to young patients (who tend to have a higher rate of regression and typically need touch-ups later in life), and for patients who have a family history of keratoconus or corneal ectasia (a bulging of the cornea). LASIK XTRA strengthens the cornea, which may delay the development of these inherited eye diseases.

Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK Xtra

Is there an age limit for LASIK Xtra?

As long as you are at least 18 years old, you can undergo LASIK Xtra. There are no specific upper age limits for the procedure.

If you are wondering whether you are too young or too old for the procedure, Dr. Ashraf encourages you to schedule an in-person evaluation.

Will I have any pain during the procedure?

No, LASIK Xtra is a painless procedure. Dr. Ashraf will apply anesthetic eye drops prior to treatment so you do not feel discomfort. Our team can also give you a sedative medication to help you relax during the surgery.

If I’ve already had LASIK, can I have LASIK Xtra?

Yes. If you previously had LASIK surgery and need a touch-up, LASIK Xtra might be suitable for you. This will be discussed during your evaluation.

How long does LASIK Xtra take?

LASIK Xtra only adds a few minutes to the total treatment time.

What is corneal crosslinking?

Corneal crosslinking is the process of stiffening and strengthening the collagen fibers of the cornea. Stiff, strong collagen fibers provide structural support to the cornea to help it retain its normal round shape. If the collagen fibers lose their strength, the cornea can thin and bulge outward in a cone-like shape.

During a crosslinking procedure, a concentrated riboflavin solution is applied to the corneal tissue and activated with a special ultraviolet light. This combination stimulates the production of new crosslinks in the collagen fibers; with new crosslinks, the collagen fibers become stronger and stiffer.

Corneal crosslinking during LASIK is very similar to corneal crosslinking for keratoconus, with a few minor exceptions, such as total treatment time.

What is riboflavin?

Riboflavin is a B-complex vitamin that enhances the crosslinking process and protects the eye from exposure to ultraviolet light.

Are riboflavin and ultraviolet light safe for use in the eyes?

Yes, the application of riboflavin drops and ultraviolet light is generally safe for the eyes. Riboflavin is a non-toxic substance that occurs naturally in the body and is frequently added to food and supplements. The ultraviolet light exposed to the eyes during crosslinking is equal to or less than what a person would be exposed to during a day in the sun during the summer.

Serious side effects in response to riboflavin or ultraviolet light are very rare.

Do I need to take any special precautions after having LASIK Xtra?

Dr. Ashraf and our team will provide complete post-operative instructions. The guidelines are very similar to those provided to patients who have traditional LASIK. Please be particularly cautious not to rub or press on your eyes right after surgery.

How long does it take to get vision back after crosslinking treatment?

Your vision may be blurry right after treatment and you may experience sensitivity to light or a burning or gritty sensation in your eyes. Beyond that, your visual recovery should be the same or similar to what it would be if you had LASIK without crosslinking.
